(written in Minnesota)
last night
the twilight was so thick
the day was drenched in a heavy rainstorm
and as Night crept closer, the air finally cleared
i remember the dark silhouettes in the parking lot
people mere shadows with
the glow of the sky behind them
a backdrop of storm clouds
and beams of sunlight
together a picture so beautiful
my heart cried out in a wistful song
and the feeling of loneliness cut me deeply
but i felt so awake, so alive in the shadows
for life stretched out just beyond long, green hilltops
and for a moment we were all quiet,
as lightning struck
in a Midwestern sky
the rain had stopped, the pavement, wet
and we all quietly slid into our cars
to return home.
